The Broad-Line Region in Active Galactic Nuclei
We review the basic observed and inferred properties of the broad emission-line region in AGNs, as well as the basics of the reverberation-mapping technique that can be used to determine the size and structure of the region. We argue that the current best evidence points to a multi-component line-emitting region, with a disk-like structure, possibly an extension of the accretion disk itself, an...
متن کاملCentral Masses and Broad-Line Region Sizes of Active Galactic Nuclei: I. Comparing the Photoionization and Reverberation Techniques
The masses and emission-line region sizes of AGNs can be measured by “reverberation-mapping” techniques and we use these results to calibrate similar determinations made by photoionization models of the AGN line-emitting regions. Reverberation mapping uses the light travel-time delayed emission-line response to continuum variations to determine the size and kinematics of the emission-line regio...
متن کامل6 v 1 1 N ov 1 99 5 Reverberation Mapping and the Disk Wind Model of the Broad Line Region
Using the disk wind model of Murray et al. (1995), we calculate line profiles and frequency-resolved response functions for broad line emission from the surface of an accretion disk in an AGN in the presence of a radiatively driven wind. We find that the combined effects of the shears in the wind and in the disk itself produce anisotropic line emission which solves several well-known problems c...
متن کاملEvidence for an InterMediate Line Region in AGN’s Inner Torus Region and Its Evolution from Narrow to Broad Line Seyfert I Galaxies
We have decomposed the broad Hα, Hβ and Hγ lines of 90 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) into a superposition of a very broad and an intermediate Gaussian components (VBGC and IMGC) and discovered that the two Gaussian components evolve with FWHM of the whole emission lines. We suggest that the VBGC and the IMGC are produced in different emission regions, namely, Very Broad Line Region (VBLR) and I...
متن کاملAdvances in Reverberation Mapping
This contribution briefly reviews the reverberation mapping technique which leads to determination of black hole masses. I focus on the emerging relation between the broad-line region size and the active galactic nucleus (AGN) luminosity, and on an overview of recent results of reverberation mapping studies which are starting to cover the full AGN luminosity range. Preliminary results and time ...
